OS 4, mac. OS 1. 0. OS 2. We foresee more tablet- focused software tweaks, especially as the i. Pad Pro 2 launch date is widely rumored happen anywhere from April to September with the i. Phone 8 and i. Phone 8 Plus. OS 1. 0. 3 new featuresi. OS 1. 0. 3 launched on Monday, March 2. OS 1. 0. 3. 2 is the latest public beta version. Adds a Find My Air. Pods to the Find My i. Phone app. Your i. Phone changed when Apple launched i. OS 1. 0. 3 to everyone. It's a smaller incremental update, but an important one for Air. Pods owners. The new Find My Air. Pods feature helps you track down your new Apple wireless earbuds case. It also plays music through each Air. Pods in case you lose one. That's the only major improvement we see in i. OS 1. 0. 3, but it has performance perks that are harder to see at first, as we're currently experiencing with Siri. Siri can now check pending bills on payment apps, schedule ridesharing trips and monitor your car locks, fuel and lights for certain automakers. Finally, i. OS 1. Pad Pro 1. 2. 9 tablet. There are three new arial shots of watery coasts on the big i. Pad. Your i. Phone is now the shortest way to express a 'shrug' and 'fingers crossed.'Hate constantly having to fiddle with camera setting each time they reset upon closing the app? Well, there's a new configuration that lets you preserve them. The 'Preserve Settings' camera submenu lets you lock in the camera mode (such as video, square, portrait), the photo filter (like chrome, mono and instant), and Live Photo (in case you want it off by default). New full- screen message effects debut in i. OS 1. 0. 2i. OS 1. Celebration' and 'Love' full- screen message effects. It also adds three new wallpapers of different colored droplets. They're artsy, but not groundbreaking. There's a new pre- loaded app from Apple and good news: you probably won't want to immediately delete this one. It's the all- new TV app. The opening menus to the new i. OS 1. 0. 2 TV app. It pulls from sources like i. Tunes and streaming services like HBO Now and Hulu. US networks like Fox, CBS, The CW, AMC, Comedy Central and Starz are here too. The great thing about this is that, as you log into each, the TV app's 'Watch Now' tab begins to populate with shows you are or should be watching. It breaks down the barriers between the different video apps out there. See 'The Beast' (right), carried over from the VIdeos app. Apple's TV app is supposed to replace the neglected Videos app (but for some users, both apps are present). There's no need for two now. The new app added our one and only TV show episode (a free i. Tunes promo from 2. Videos' had been carrying around. That tells you something about its past usefulness. There's thankfully a lot more to the all- encompassing TV app. Behind in scenes, there's also a new settings menu for 'TV Provider.' It's designed to let the TV app pull from subscription services like Dish and Sling TV. Basically, the new TV app delivers TV content no matter where it's sourced from. It really breaks down the walls between siloed video apps on your i. OS device. Pro tip: There's no Netflix channel in the 'Store' tab, but you can add individual Netflix shows through the 'Search' tab. Just search 'Black Mirror' and you'll see a list of all three seasons that lead to any episode you want in Netflix. Don't see the TV app just yet? You're not alone, actually. We didn't see it until i. OS 1. 0. 2 beta 6 and it may not launch outside the US immediately. As they say in the TV world, stay tuned. OS 1. 0. 1 featuresi. OS 1. 0. 1 introduced Portrait Mode photos on i. Phone 7 Plus. Also added message replay functions and fixes bugs. But i. OS 1. 0. 1. Although Apple launches i. OS 1. 0 right on the nose on Tuesday, September 1. Pacific, it returned with another set of tweaks just 4. Portrait Mode is the highlight of i. OS 1. 0. 1, but it can only be enjoyed by i. Phone 7 Plus owners since it requires the rear dual- lens camera. It's a special camera mode within the default app that adds a distinct bokeh effect, which blurs the background and really accentuates on your subject. Correctly framing shots in i. OS 1. 0. 1 Portrait Mode can be difficult. This software- driven bokeh is picky about lighting (dimly lit environments just don't work) and subject distance (not too far, but, hey, not too close either). It can also be difficult to adjust to i. OS 1. 0. 1 Portrait Mode because the camera angle of view is extremely cropped, tighter than when recording video. Take two steps back from where you normally shoot photos. This awful persnickety bokeh mode comes through in the end. You can really tell the difference because Portrait Mode saves both the bokeh and non- bokeh photos to your camera roll for a quick comparison. Image 1 of 2. The blurred background is less distracting thanks to i. OS 1. 0. 1 Portrait Mode. The next photo shows the original image without bokeh. Image 2 of 2. Without blur effect , you can see how the background can be distracting. Photobombs can become a thing of the past with this stylized Portrait Mode. Portrait Mode is limited to the i. Phone 7 Plus, but the 1. GB over- the- air update is recommended for everyone else, too. Apple has fixed a handful of i. OS 1. 0 problems, as noted in the i. OS 1. 0. 1. 1 release notes. All i. OS 1. 0 devices can now replay message animations in i. OS 1. 0. 1. 1. In case you miss a friend's i. Message with balloons or lasers, it can be replayed. We've experienced – and users have reported worse battery life than normal. This appears to be limited to i. OS 1. 0. 1. 1, which is all the more reason to take a leap of faith and update to the i. OS 1. 0. 2 beta. Tech. Radar's take: Download i. OS 1. 0. 1 (or i. OS 1. 0. 2 now), especially if you have an i. Phone 7 Plus. Its new Portrait Mode adds an extra layer to the camera app, giving you photos that literally stand out from the new and also stunning Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL camera. Just avoid i. OS 1. OS 1. 0 compatibility. Works with i. Phone 5, i. Pad 3, i. Pad mini 2 and i. Pod touch 6th gen or higher. All 3. 0- pin dock devices are out. Lightning or nothing! OS 1. 0 is available on your i. Phone, i. Pad or i. Pod touch, unless of course you have an age- old phone or tablet that still uses the 3. Pad mini or i. Pod touch. It's lightning or NOTHING! That's where Apple draws the line in the sand for 2. Its forthcoming mobile operating system update won't support for i. Phone 4. S and i. Pad 2. The i. Pad mini and i. Pod touch 5th gen are the outliers that won't work either despite having Lightning. Time to upgrade. It's not a big surprise. In addition many of them not lightning connections, these devices include 5. MB of RAM and it's miraculous that they even supported i. OS 9 when we thought they'd be axed from that update last year. Slide to unlock is gone and replaced with simple instructions: . It makes reaching for the tiny, side- mounted sleep/wake button a thing of the past. You can immediately respond to messages as soon as you pick up your phone, without ever leaving the lockscreen. It's all done inline. No more digging around the home screen and layers of app menus to check vital information. If you have a doorbell camera notification, you can see who's at the front door, use the intercom or unlock the door. This . Uber is just one third- party app maker that allows you to hard press on notifications. You'll get live updates on where your driver is on a map - usually headed in the other direction. Tech. Radar's take: You don't really need to open your phone to do half of your daily tasks anymore. Replying to messages, accepting invitations or seeing where the heck your Uber driver is (answer: circling the wrong block a third time) can all be done from the lockscreen. Clear all notifications button. Vanquish all notifications at once with 3. D Touch. That's it. What may be the best change to i. OS 1. 0 notifications is the ability to clear all of your old notifications with 3. D Touch. Swiping them away one by one or dismissing them in groups is a time- consuming mess in i. OS 9. Just hard press that little . Tap it once to just dismiss the group of notifications. It's super easy to clear away expired alerts with i. OS 1. 0 and it will please everyone inflicted with phone notification- clearing OCD. Tech. Radar's take: Being able to clear all notifications has been a long time coming. Our only complaint is that it didn't arrive sooner. Water detectioni. Phone 7 and i. Phone 7 Plus are water- resistant, but all other i. Phones are noti. OS 1. Only the i. Phone 7 and i. Phone 7 Plus are water- resistant, but Apple hasn't made a fully waterproof i. Phone. So it's making it easier to avoid potential water damage with the i. OS 1. 0 update. Source: Everything. Apple. Pro. The software includes a warning message to unplug the lighting cable if the phone detects water. Don't test it out, though. For non- i. Phone 7 owners, this i. OS 1. 0 message offers a clutch set of instructions, which you should follow, and subsequently put your phone in rice, if you believe that myth. What's it like? Is it worth the hassle of testing unfinished software? We've added our updated thoughts on each and every new i. OS 1. 1 feature below. Apple's tablet becomes a possible laptop replacement (for some people) with revamped i. OS multitasking. Both the i. Pad and i. Phone get a much- needed Control Center reorganization, too. There are new camera modes, Siri is smarter, and i. OS 1. 1 (finally) thrusts Apple to the forefront of augmented reality innovation. The i. Phone 8's AR rumors are all but confirmed at this point. Here everything you'll experience in the i. OS 1. 1 beta that's now open to the public. OS 1. 1 dock makes i. Pad multitasking easy. The new i. Pad Pro 1. Pad Pro 1. 2. 9 are becoming a laptop replacement for many people, and i. OS 1. 1 makes that easier to realistically pull off. New multi- tasking grid view with a redesigned Control Centeri. OS 1. 1 includes a dock just like a Mac computer, and it follows you from app- to- app along the bottom. It's hidden, but you can always swipe up to access it. The bottom app dock also shows up in the multitasking menu, which is now laid out in a grid. It's so much easier to jump between apps now, like on a Mac. Book. Tech. Radar's take: This is the most important i. OS 1. 1 change if you own a newer i. Pad. We found that the new dock and multitasking grid menu less like siloed app switching and more like a multi- window- friendly computer. That's important for the growing number of people who use the i. Pad Pro as a laptop- replacement. Drag and drop comes to the i. Pad. Drag and Drop also debuts on i. OS 1. 1, and instantly launches apps into split- screen mode when you drag them to the side of the screen. Image 1 of 2. Drag and Drop apps right into split- screen view. Image 2 of 2. You can also drag and drop photos and hyperlinks across split- screen apps. You can also transport items across a halved screen: text, photos, hyperlinks and files. This – not the i. Mac Pro – is Apple's answer to a touchscreen computer. OS 1. 1 makes the i. Pad feel closer to a laptop than merely a super- sized i. Phone, and it's something that no Android tablet, not even the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, offers today. Drag and Drop for i. Phone may be a possibility in the future, but according to beta testers, it's currently disabled in the ongoing developer beta. Tech. Radar's take: This removes several unnecessary steps when using an i. Pad for productivity purposes. In our testing, we were relieved to no longer be forced to copy and then paste simple text and photos between a split- screen menu. It's all right there. You should be able to drag and drop, we thought for the last two years. Now we can. i. OS 1. Now that all of the i. OS 1. 1 news is out there – and before we get to the rest of the changes – let's stop to tell you when the i. OS 1. 1 release date happens. OS 1. 1 will launch this autumn, according to Apple, but developers enrolled in Apple’s developer program can download i. OS 1. 1 now, at least in its early form. You can test it out, too, as Apple just launched the i. OS 1. 1 public beta on June 2. Phone and i. Pad. Tech. Radar's take: Should you download i. OS 1. 1? We've done it (clearly). For the most part, it's been an amazing upgrade, but some apps that rely on Bluetooth –like our smart door lock – can be problematic. It's up to the developer to sort this out, but that may not happen until September with the rumored i. Phone 8. i. OS 1. Phone 8 ARi. OS 1. Apple the largest AR platform in the world – overnight, thanks to so many i. Phones and i. Pads out there. It's an instant boon for augmented reality fans and developers alike. That's why the developer- focused Apple ARKit is a big deal for everyone, not just app makers. It hints at the biggest features to come from the i. Phone 8 three months from now. Get ready for a futuristic life in augmented reality. What is Apple ARKit on i. OS 1. 1 exactly? Developers will be able to place virtual objects into the real world using your i. Phone or i. Pad and its camera. It's like a really advanced version of Pokemon Go, but with many more possibilities. The table has nothing on it. But on the i. Pad, it's an interactive world. In fact, Pokemon was one of several AR demos Apple showed off. But we were even more impressed with what Peter Jackson's studio Wingut AR demoed. Its complex AR showcase involved a battle between an outpost and spaceships, and it all happen on an otherwise peaceful, empty living room table. Speaking of tablets, Ikea is reportedly a launch partner for the i. OS 1. 1 AR feature, letting you place imaginary furniture in rooms down to the millimeter. Apple just created a new playground for million of existing devices and put the Microsoft Hololens and Google Tango on notice. Tech. Radar's take: Don't expect a whizbang augmented reality experience if you download the i. OS 1. 1 beta right now. These are developer tools meant to craft an AR future for the i. Phone and i. Pad. That said, we're very hopeful for Apple's big AR push given how many i. OS devices there are out there. OS 1. 1 puts Apple Pencil to the test. Apple Pencil is a great little tool for the i. Pad Pro series, but our one complaint in our i. Pad Pro 9. 7 review was that you can't use it everywhere you'd like to in apps. That all changes with i. OS 1. 1. Instant Markup lets you draw on PDFs and photos and Instant Notes lets you jot things down ASAP – right from the lockscreen. All of your Instant Notes on the lockscreen are saved in Notes, so don't worry. And drawing on Notes near existing text cleverly now moves the text out of the way. Image 1 of 4. Take notes, even from the lock screen. It saves in Notes, don't worry. Image 2 of 4. You can markup with the Apple Pencil right from PDFs and images. Image 3 of 4. Text, move out of the way. I'm drawing here! Image 4 of 4. Scan and sign documents without the need for a multi- function printer. Document Scanner in Notes defeats the need to painstakingly scan important documents that you need to sign. It scans, crops edges, removes tilt and glare and lets you fill in the blanks or sign away with an Apple Pencil. Tech. Radar's take: This is another significant update for the i. Pad Pro series. We're not saying the Apple Pencil was useless, but the scenarios for it were very limited (hello, artists). Now, i. OS 1. 1 makes it a productivity tool and it goes hand- in- hand with the wizardry of Apple's document scan. New i. Pad keyboard shortcuts Apple is making a big productivity push with the i. Pad Pro 1. 0. 5- inch, and i. OS 1. 1 is doing its part with tweaked keyboard shortcuts. You won't have to switch to the second keyboard layer anymore. It combines letter keys with numbers, symbols and punctuation marks (normally reserved on the second keyboard layer) and accessed by a new flicking gesture. Flicking these secondary numbers and symbols downward is easier than having to switch back and forth between the two layers. We kind of wish it were coming to the i. Phone 7 Plus, too. Tech. Radar's take: This is one of the smallest i. OS 1. 1 changes, but also one of the most important. Not having to flip back and forth between keyboard layers saves you a step, which results in about half a second of saved time. Add them up over the course of the day, and you've got more time on your hands a less stressful means of typing out an real email that's longer than one line and filled with typos. We really like this new i. OS 1. 1 feature. Apple Files opens up your many clouds. Apple is debuting a new Files app in i. OS 1. 1 that lets you sort through all of your files. Your can browse, search and organize them all in one place. Apple Files not only has recent files from your i. Pad, but on other i. OS devices, in i. Cloud Drive and from other services, including Box, Google Drive and Dropbox. It's just one more way Apple is trying to make the i. Pad Pro a de facto computer for people who don't need a Mac. Book 2. 01. 7 or i. Mac Pro. Tech. Radar's take: This move, like announcing the Apple Pencil two years ago, goes against what we expected from the company. However, it's a welcome change with i. OS 1. 1. You may not use files right away, but as you rely on the new remote document and photo repository more and more, it'll become essential to your device. Messages won't take up your storage anymorei. OS 1. 1 is making i. Messages even better than it already is with seamless i. Cloud syncing across your i. Phone, i. Pad and Mac. That means two things. First, when you delete a conversation bubble on an i. Pad, it'll also disappear on your i. Phone and Mac. Book Pro. Great. Second, it frees up all of your i. Message storage, a real problem for rabid texters who have been with Apple since i. Message first launched. Whether or not you know it, i. Messages take up a bunch of space in your i. Phone and i. Pad. It's all of that 'Other' storage in yellow if you ever look in i. Tunes. Soon, with i. OS 1. 1, you'll be able to back up all of your i. Messages to i. Cloud as they get archived to Apple's secure internet servers. That's a big relief. Tech. Radar's take: The fact that i. OS 1. 1 syncs i. Messages between devices via i. Cloud may be a bigger change than all of the cosmetic, sticker- filled additions we got with i. OS 1. 0. Because even though it's a great texting app, especially since you can message people on a Mac and i. Pad (something that's not easy to do natively on Android), messages can get out of order or remain on your other devices once you delete them. The fact that it frees up a lot of storage from the yellow 'Other' mystery bar is a bonus. Apple Pay payments to friends. Apple Pay is expanding to include person- to- person payment features when you upgrade to i. OS 1. 1. It's exactly what Venmo and Pay. Pal do right now, but via an app- free solution. Apple Pay payments use Touch ID for authentication and i. Messages to send between friends or other contacts who owe you money. With so many contactless payment options on i. OS right now, including Gmail and Facebook, there's no reason avoid paying back your friends. That’s why i. OS 1. Photos, and power Quick. Type suggestions. And when you do share sensitive data with Apple for services like Siri and Maps, it’s always encrypted and never used to build user profiles.
